Kurt has been protecting, preserving and caring for the Pacific Northwest’s Natural Resources since he was 19 years old, and first worked for WA Wildlife And Fisheries. He now has over 30 years dedicated to the conservation of our wildlife as a professional marine biologist. So the title of Artist is not something he ever thought he’d wear, but his time out in nature lead him to see the beauty and images hidden in ancient wood that has been preserved for centuries, and some for millennium. He spends hours upon hours cleaning, sanding and buffering the wood to bring out it’s natural elements, while persevering the original shape. The vision of Perrywood is to bridge the gap between modern living and the grounding nature of being close to nature by creating displayable art in it’s original shape to be displayed in homes, offices and other places where people gather. No wood is manufactured or cut down from living trees. These are pieces of wood that have experienced the natural cycle of life and death and preservation, each with their own story that has uniquely shaped them into the piece that Kurt uncovers. He has found that people are drawn the to text, sturdiness and unique shapes that his art form reveals.
